Fixing Mistakes on Your Credit Report
If you find a mistake in your credit report, it is important for you to take steps toward correcting it immediately. Otherwise, your credit rating can be adversely affected and you may have difficulty acquiring loans and getting a credit card.
The first step you should take if you discover an error on your credit report is to write a letter to the credit reporting agency stating what you have found to be wrong. Legally, the credit reporting agency must contact the company that placed the negative information on your report in order to ask the company to prove that the information is accurate. If the company cannot prove the accuracy of the information, it will be removed immediately.
If the company that placed the information on your credit report offers proof supporting its case, the information will remain on your report. You can, however, write a dispute statement that must be included with your credit report. In this way, future prospective lenders and credit card companies can see your side of the story as well. These statements can go a long way in helping to get a loan or obtaining a credit card with a lower APR. Therefore, it is well worth your time and your effort to fix mistakes on your report and to write a statement pleading your case.
