Traveling With Your Credit Card

When vacationing, a credit card is an excellent tool to take with you. After all, it provides far greater security and protection than personal checks, traveler’s checks, and cash. But, before selecting the card to take with you on your next trip, there are a few things you might want to consider.

First of all, you should look into fees that may be associated with international travel if you intend to travel abroad. In some cases, you may pay up to 10% of every purchase in fees! These fees may include a 1-3% fee for what is called a “foreign currency conversion” fee. In addition, the merchant may add on an additional 6% fee for converting your charge into United States dollars. So, read your cardholder agreement closely or call the credit card’s customer service department to learn about the fees that may be associated with your card. Then, choose the one with the best deal to take along with you.

While you are on the phone with your credit card issuer, you should also let them know that you are planning a vacation – whether you will be staying in the states or traveling abroad. This is because many credit cards have anti-fraud software in place that picks up on unusual activity. Suddenly making purchases in another state or in another country sends up a red flag and puts you at risk for having your purchases denied. Nothing can ruin a vacation faster than having no money – so plan ahead so your vacation will be one to remember for all the right reasons.
