Police Credit CardsPolice officers have been given credit cards in the past, but due to do recent events many of these officers have lost their cards. About 1400 credit cards have been revoked from police officers due to inappropriate spending. The Metropolitan Police Authority investigated 2 million pounds in police expenses and that amount is unaccounted for. There is no documentation stating the reason for the expenses. This amount is paid by the taxpayers making it an even worse offense. In January of 2008 there were 800 cards removed from officer’s wallets, but another 600 have since been taken away. Some of the expenses being analyzed are from 2003 in which there were claims created on the misuse of the cards. The Metropolitan Police have been looking through paperwork for expenses in the senior offices, but it seems that there were only a small number of officers truly involved. Last year there were two arrests of detectives made on theft suspicion, but they were bailed out. The police have 3,533 American Express cards in circulation with the police officers. They have just asked for a reduction of this amount. They gave the cards out to make it easier for the claimed expenses necessary for the job to be paid. When the MPA first took a look at this whole situation about 3.6 million pounds of unaccounted for spending needed to be explained. The latest report says that 1.88 million pounds is still not found and a sum of 96,000 pounds is under investigation as we write. Changes are being made to the cards still being used. The police officers will have 5,000 pounds a year for expenses. Those who cannot justify the expenses in 30 days will have the cards removed and they will be getting a deduction in salary to pay the money back.
