Not Interest Free?

Several UK residents have been getting themselves into a bit of trouble with an interest free credit card. This interest free credit card is actually resulting in serious damage to personal wealth for those who have it. A UK resident applies for a new credit card because it was offering interest free and looked like the best deal ever. Abbey is the bank the card is through. The deal offered no interest for a year with balance transfer and zero percent on spending or purchases for the first three months.

Interest Rates Spike after Credit Crunch

The cost of having a credit card has increased in the last six months and analysts believe it is directly related to the credit crunch. As credit card companies began to struggle with defaulting customers they decided they needed to crack down on the ones causing them the most trouble. The Bank of England has lowered the interest rates, but this doesn’t seem to be affecting the credit card industry.

Credit Checks Increase

Claire Foster is a resident in the UK who recently went online to a comparison website for loans. She felt that this site would be safe as it was a respected site, but she was wrong. It had just as much risk for identity theft as lesser well- known websites she could have used. Claire was first apprised of the situation when she received letters from a loan company stating there had been a breach in data. This letter said there had been personal information about customers stolen and some borrowers actually received phone calls from other loan firms.

Credit Cards Removed from Market

Many of the UK lenders have been removing their best credit card deals from the market because they are worried about the current economic situation. According to recent research one in 20 Scots will be perusing the web for new credit card deals in the next 6 months. Unfortunately many of these Scots are not going to find the deals they are hoping for. The main deal they will be looking for are the transfer balance deals in which they can obtain cheaper interest rates. The credit card lenders don’t want to lose any more money than they already have. This means they are beginning to take the cheaper deals away or shorten the term of the deal. The companies are still offering competitive interest rates though.

Consumer Borrowing at a High

Many Britons have increased their borrowing amount in the last few months so that it is at a five year high. They are borrowing using credit cards, overdraft fees, and loans. The reason many of the consumers are increasing their rate of borrowing centres on the fact that most are just struggling to get by on a monthly basis with the income they have compared to the rise in prices on necessities.

Credit card companies do not profit from fraudulent activities. In fact they are not usually able to recover the stolen amount and they must bear the entire cost. Chargebacks are only done when a merchant doesn’t have a signature or they don’t have the complete information.

What is Carding?

Carding is when a person checks the validity of stolen card data. The fraudster would enter in the card information on a website for a real time transaction to see if the transaction is going to be successful. If it is a successful process then the thief knows the card is still active and that they can use it.

What is Skimming?

Skimming is considered to be a theft of credit card information using what is supposed to be a legitimate transaction. This type of credit card theft is usually an inside job. An employee gets a job at a store or is approached with a deal and then they copy receipts or replace the credit card machine with a fake one. Restaurants, bars, and retail stores are very common places that skimming occurs.
