Caravan Insurance

If you have a caravan, you might want to consider obtaining caravan insurance.  While having caravan insurance is not necessarily required in the UK, having the insurance in place can help you keep your investment protected.

Types of Caravans

The type of caravan insurance you purchase will depend upon the type of caravan you own.  There are two primary types of caravans you may purchase:

  • Touring Caravans
  • Static Caravans

Touring caravans are those that are towed behind a vehicle while static caravans are those that are permanently placed at a campsite.  Each type of caravan has its own risks and special circumstances that need to be considered.  Touring caravans, for example are at a greater risk of being involved in car accidents because they are taken on the road.  They are also more likely to be damaged by winds or because they are improperly loaded.  Since these caravans are taken on the road, it is legally required to carry Third Party Only insurance on these types of caravans.

Since static caravans are not taken on the road, they are more at risk of being damaged by the environment.  Floods and fallen trees, for example, are two potential hazards for static caravans.  You are also more likely to have items stolen from a static caravan than from a touring caravan, particularly if you leave it unattended for long periods of time.  Therefore, it is even more important to have coverage for the contents within the caravan when you have a static caravan.

Obtaining the Proper Coverage for Your Caravan

Since both types of caravans have their own unique characteristics, it is important to obtain an insurance policy that meets the specific needs of each.  In many cases, it is cheaper to obtain one policy to cover both theft and damage for static caravans. With touring caravans, on the other hand, you might want to look for a policy that will provide you with a different form of coverage during the off season while it is in storage.  Since a touring caravan is generally used while traveling on vacation, it is also a good idea to have a policy that will provide you with alternate accommodations if your caravan becomes damaged while on the road.

Regardless of the type of caravan you have, be certain to check your policy about travel restrictions.  Some policies, for example, will have certain European travel exclusions in place that will limit your travel abroad.  In addition, some companies will insist upon having certain devices installed in your caravan, such as anti-theft devices.  Be certain to find out more about these requirements before obtaining a policy.  This way, you can be certain you are in compliance and your policy remains valid.

While most car insurance policies will often provide Third Party Only coverage for caravans, it is still a good idea to have a separate policy in place for your caravan.  This way, you will receive compensation if it becomes damaged or stolen, which will provide you with peace of mind while traveling on the road.
